Being aware of your face shape is invaluable when you're trying to work out the best shapes to flatter your face and even your figure.
It's an important factor of course for every item you wear around your face; glasses and sunglasses, hairstyles and necklines, and your makeup will be more effective when you know how to accentuate your bone structure.
But your face shape can certainly influence the shape and style of clothes you choose to wear!
As you look around the Internet you may come across lots of different face shapes and this can become very confusing.
I'm looking at the 5 basic shapes so we can see how the bone structure works.
1 Pull your hair back to show hairline, take a photo of your face and print.
2 Draw dots around the area of your face as I show below.
3 Fill in the dots and discover the closest to your shape. It won't be exact!
Which is the widest part of your face?
Oval and round faces have curves and the widest part of your face is around your cheekbones.
Square or rectangular face shapes will vary in length but the forehead and jawline are roughly the same width.
A heart shape has a wider forehead with a pointed chin. A long face has straight sides and a curved jawline.
An OVAL face has curves. Hilary Duff has a perfectly balanced OVAL face although your face may be a little longer or shorter.
The oval face shape is often considered to be the ideal as it has near perfect proportions and balance.
Curves at both the forehead and the jawline, although the jaw is a little narrower, with more prominent cheekbones.
Ginnifer Goodwin, above, also has curves but her face is shorter; the width and length of the face are approximately the same. Her face is ROUND.
This face has soft facial features and a rounded jawline, the widest part being the rounded cheekbones. Even the hairline is usually rounded.
This can give a youthful look but it can also add weight and you may look to slim and lengthen the face.
Angelina's face is very angular, see the wide jawline. This can be considered a SQUARE or a RECTANGULAR shape.
This is a strong face shape with the forehead and jawline of a similar width. The jaw is strong, broad and obviously square whereas the cheeks, the sides of the face and even the hairline are straight.
Scarlett Johansson has a wide forehead which shapes down to quite a pointed chin, a typical HEART shape.
The cheekbones are almost as wide as the forehead and the face is longer than it is wide.
The rounded hairline will sometimes have a pronounced widow's peak; a v-shape at the forehead center.
Sarah Jessica Parker's face is much narrower than high, with an elongated forehead and a curved but strong jawline.
This is considered a typical long face shape. If you have a squared jawline then consider yourself to have a square/rectangular face.
"Long faces are considered the most elegant and regal of all face shapes".
